Directional Microphones
A directional microphone is built into the hearing aid and helps emphasize sounds coming from in front of the hearing aid and de – emphasize sounds coming from behind the hearing aid. Since most conversations occur with the listener facing the speaker, the assumption is that the speech will be coming from in front of the hearing aid and noise will be coming from behind the hearing aid.A recent study conducted at the University of Iowa and University of Pittsburgh concluded that individuals with hearing loss wearing directional microphones obtained scores for speech understanding in background noise comparable to those of college students with normal hearing.
- Improves speech understanding in noisy environments.
- Helps focus on the sounds of interest coming from the front by reducing amplification from the sides and rear of the wearer.
- Automatically adapts to and reduce the dominant noise source in a listening environment.
